Artist Statement

My artistic journey has evolved in parallel with a series of  significant life transitions. Personal health challenges, the shifting  of family dynamics, my migration from Shanghai to New Zealand, and a year and a half of living in Canada—along with the global  upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical  shifts—have all forced me to confront the impermanence of life  and the uncontrollability of external circumstances.

In response to this sense of displacement and the feeling of being  an outsider, I have turned to painting as a means of processing  and combating these emotions. My work is often centered around  reflections on the passage of time and the accumulation of history, with recurring themes such as historic architecture, sculptures, ruins, as well as natural elements like waves and stone beaches.  These subjects allow me to explore the commonalities and  differences in how various civilizations represent similar themes, while also capturing the traces left by time—traces that have been  shaped and worn away by centuries of history.

In terms of style, I gravitate towards simplified, monochromatic  palettes, often resembling ink wash techniques, and I seek to  convey the flowing motion of time through my brushstrokes. My  aim is to create a sense of quietude and depth—an atmosphere  that blends the serene, contemplative qualities of Eastern  philosophy with my personal reflections on life’s fragility and  transience. Through this approach, I hope to translate my  emotions and thoughts into a visual language that resonates  across both time and space.
